Expect them to be warm and welcoming. Visitors have been coming to the Episcopal Church of the Advent for some 150 years. You may be here for a brief holiday visit, a new resident or a long time member of the community who is just curious. On Sunday join us for worship and after the 10:30 service come to the Parish Hall for coffee, tea and a snack, and for a bit of friendly conversation. We love new faces.
Our Sunday morning services are celebrations of the Eucharist or Holy Communion. We hear lessons from scripture and usually a brief sermon. We pray for our own needs and those of the world around us. Then we give thanks in the blessing and breaking and sharing of the bread and wine of communion. Everyone who is baptized in whatever part of Christ’s holy church, is welcome to receive. If you chose not to receive you are welcome to join us at the rail for a blessing. The form of the service follows our Book of Common Prayer (and a convenient service bulletin that guides you to the right pages and hymns). Usually the language is modern. At our 10:30 service and on feast days we do like to sing. So, join in.
You may notice a lot of variety, folk who stand or kneel for prayers, folk who bless or cross themselves and those who do not. We come from a wide variety of traditions reflecting the diversity of the church. Some of us have been doing this for years. Some are new to faith. All are welcome. In prayer it is always the right way.
During the week on Thursdays at Noon and on special days, we celebrate as well. On occasion the choir will also offer the ancient sung prayers of Evensong. You are always welcome.
Yes! Children are always welcome. They are welcome in the service or at Sunday school. They are welcome when they are quiet and prayerful and when they make a very joyful noise. But, they are always welcome.
Just ask. We have large print bulletin and prayer books. If you are having trouble getting around and would like for communion to come to you, ask an usher. If you have an allergy and need a gluten free communion let us know in advance so that we can ready. If there is something we missed, just ask. All of us are welcome in all our variety.
